Urban wear is characterized by its bold colors, flashy jewelry, and distinctive patterns. Started by youth in New York city, and influenced by hip hop artists in other major cities, this fashion trend has remained popular for two decades.

Urban shirts usually mean short-waisted shirts that are close fitting. They usually have pictures of popular artists or characters on them. They often have graffiti style lettering on them. A predominant design theme is skull and skeletons. This motif is also present in hip hop jewelry and belt buckles.

For a while in the hip hop style of clothing, oversized urban shirts were popular. In recent years, people who wear it choose to wear closer fitting t-shirts that do not fall as low as the traditional urban shirts so as to show off the belt buckle, which have grown over time.

Another form of urban shirt that was made popular by hip hop artists was the throwback jersey. Many artists and popular movie starts wore jerseys that got rather expensive. Many of the people that were wearing urban clothing at the time also opted to wear these throwback jerseys. For many it made sense as a part of the sports wear that is prevalent in urban clothing.
